Sheffield Road by Angelina Valdez

Roll down the window

and drive fast.

Feel the dirt.

In your teeth,

under your nails,

in your ears.

Drive fast.

Past the smoke,

taking it with you.

See more in the distance.

Smells like 2 miles.

Speed down Sheffield.

Drive past trucks, shovels,

fire, flames.

Generations of men

leveling the fields

that they’ve spent the last months on,

taking the mice with them.

Controlled flames by

controlling men, trying.
