Gifts From Mom

In every moment
There is a critique under my tongue
Vitriol lies in wait inside my mouth
Trying to escape as words
Back into my ears
Telling me I am not as good
As smart
Or pretty
Telling me I don’t deserve
the peace I so desire

But you
Shut my mouth and fill my thoughts
with affirmations so thick
I spit them out on accident
You replace doubt with courage
and I am a bird uncaged
Free to live daringly
Knowing I’m enough
Because you told me so
