A Color Thing

a poem by M. G. Hughes

Is there such thing as a color thing?

Or was I just born under a willow tree?

I look around and see my town

Copper and gold and brown and ivory

Come talk to me brother

Come talk to me sister

Come talk to me father

Come talk to me mother

Is there such thing as a color thing?

Or was I just born during spring?

I look by my side

I see you smile

I look behind

I see my no faced twin on the ground

Lord! May I ask why?

Is there such thing as a color thing?

Or was I just born where the mourning doves sing?
